Arsenal’s preparations for their crucial north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur have been thrown into doubt after Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that defender Gabriel sustained an adductor injury during international duty. The centre-back was forced off in the second half of Brazil’s 2-0 win over Senegal at Emirates Stadium, sparking immediate concern for Mikel Arteta.
Gabriel’s importance to Arsenal this season cannot be overstated. A central figure in a backline that has conceded just five goals in 11 Premier League matches, his consistency and physical presence have underpinned the Gunners’ title challenge. Not only has he been reliable defensively, but he has also posed a constant threat from set pieces.
He went down clutching his right thigh just before the hour mark against Senegal and, despite receiving on-field treatment, was unable to continue. His withdrawal has now become the focus of anxious discussions at London Colney ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Tottenham Hotspur.
“Bad? I don’t know,” said Ancelotti. “He had a problem with his adductor. We are really sorry for this.”

Gabriel’s setback adds to an already worrying injury list for Arsenal. Riccardo Calafiori has also pulled out of Italy’s squad with a hip problem, leaving Arteta short of options at the back. The club have been forced to navigate a demanding start to the season without several key names, including Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Odegaard, Noni Madueke, Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz.
Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus remains sidelined, further reducing Arteta’s attacking flexibility ahead of two pivotal league fixtures. After hosting Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal will take on Chelsea later this month in another high-pressure encounter that could shape the Premier League standings.
The potential absence of captain Martin Odegaard compounds Arteta’s problems. Norway coach Stale Solbakken suggested that the midfielder is unlikely to recover in time for the clash with Spurs. “It is steady,” Solbakken said of Odegaard’s injury recovery. “It is going in a steady direction but he is some distance away.”
Arsenal’s creative rhythm has often depended on Odegaard’s ability to dictate tempo and link midfield with attack. Without him, Arteta may once again need to rely on squad depth and tactical adaptability to maintain momentum against their fiercest rivals.
For both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, this derby could prove a defining moment in their respective campaigns. Spurs, under new leadership, have shown renewed resilience, while Arsenal’s defensive solidity has been their cornerstone. Gabriel’s fitness could therefore play a decisive role in determining who emerges on top in north London.
As the Emirates braces for another fierce encounter, Arsenal fans will hope their Brazilian cornerstone makes a swift recovery, with Arteta’s squad already stretched thin by a growing list of injuries.
