Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admits Inter Milan should have defeated Manchester City in the 2023 UEFA Champions League final.
During the pre-match conference in the build-up to Arsenal’s away game against Sporting CP via FCInterNews, the Spaniard reflected on his side’s recent loss at Giuseppe Meazza.
Inter and Arsenal locked horns in an intense Champions League fixture on matchday four.
Hakan Calhanoglu converted a penalty on the stroke of halftime to inspire the Nerazzurri to a narrow 1-0 triumph.
However, the Gunners dominated the game, especially in the second half, having Inter pinned to their opening third.
Despite generating a telling 1.8 xG and unleashing 20 shots on goal, they couldn’t find a way past Yann Sommer.
As a result, Inter ended the latest Champions League round as one of only two teams yet to concede a goal this season.
Meanwhile, the gut-wrenching defeat in Italy didn’t sit well with Arteta.
“We’ve taken the right steps,” Arteta said ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Lisbon.
“Looking back at how we played against Inter, against a team that has been so dominant in the league, who played a Champions League final they should have won,
“I think we played well and dominated the game, and we should have won.
“But the reality is you have to get the result, and we didn’t.
“Those are the steps we need to take next, being ruthless and much more efficient in the opponent’s penalty area.”
Inter slumped to a morale-wracking 1-0 loss in the Istanbul final as Rodri scored a second-half winner.
However, Inzaghi’s team had plenty of opportunities to turn things around.
Romelu Lukaku’s notorious miss down the final stretch is still haunting the Nerazzurri faithful to this day.
But Inter will look to write a new chapter this season following an impressive start.
They will take on RB Leipzig later this evening, aiming to extend an 11-game unbeaten run in all competitions.
