Arsenal match incredible 132-year-old English football record

Arsenal possess a voracious appetite for goals at the moment, exemplified by five first-half goals in their win over West Ham United on Saturday.

It’s the second time in the space of a few days that they have scored five goals in a single game, having thumped Sporting CP in the Uefa Champions League.

And that came just days after beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 in the Premier League to end a four-game winless run in the top flight. Amazing what a difference a couple of weeks (and the return of Martin Ødegaard) can make.

What’s most remarkable about their latest victory, though, is that the Gunners have managed to do what only two other teams have done in the history of English football.

Mikel Arteta’s side have scored five or more goals in five different away games in all competitions in 2024, the joint-most in a single calendar year by an English top-flight side, along with Sunderland in 1892 and Manchester City in 1937.

The north London still have a month to break a record that has been standing since the nineteenth century.
