Arsenal need to make the most of their Champions badge – Opinion

Arsenal finally ended their 22-year wait to become Premier League champions last season. It was a remarkable achievement, but now comes an equally important challenge – proving it was the start of a sustained period of success rather than a one-off triumph.

Arsenal must build on last season’s success

The Gunners secured their first league title since 2004, and it is paramount that we do not have to wait another two decades to celebrate winning the English top flight again.

It was the longest Arsenal had gone without winning the league since first becoming champions under the legendary Herbert Chapman in 1931. Chapman helped shape the club we all love today, laying the foundations for generations of future success.

Mikel Arteta’s men now have the opportunity to show that last season was the beginning of something special. The hard work cannot stop here. Arsenal must develop a winning mentality that delivers silverware consistently and establishes them as one of Europe’s dominant forces once again.

For years, rival supporters mocked Arsenal for being content with finishing fourth or accused them of bottling three consecutive title races. Those labels have finally begun to disappear after last season’s success, but the best way to silence any remaining doubters is to continue winning trophies.

European glory must be the next objective

The Gunners also have an incredible opportunity in the Champions League. Having reached last season’s final before suffering a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes, Arsenal now know they are capable of competing with Europe’s very best.

This season presents another chance to go one step further by winning the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history, while also ending a 32-year wait for a European trophy since lifting the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1994.

If Arsenal fail to maintain the standards that brought them Premier League glory, there is always the danger of slipping back into another prolonged trophy drought. That is something neither the club nor its supporters will want to experience again.

Arsenal cannot let this opportunity slip away

Personally, I waited 23 years to properly remember Arsenal lifting the league title. If the Gunners were forced to wait another generation before winning it again, many of today’s younger supporters would be in their late 40s or even early 50s before witnessing another championship success. Hopefully, that is something none of us will ever have to endure.

I still remember a friend’s dad, who had supported Arsenal his entire life, telling me how difficult things were before the dramatic title triumph at Anfield in 1989. Last season finally changed the narrative. Arsenal were no longer the nearly men – they were champions once again.

Now comes the challenge of staying there.

No matter how fierce next season’s title race becomes, Arsenal have a responsibility to approach it with the mindset of champions. Winning one Premier League title was a fantastic achievement. Winning another would prove that this team is building something capable of lasting for years to come.
