Arsenal are ready to rival Manchester City in the race to sign Martin Zubimendi in the January transfer window.
Mikel Arteta is a long-term admirer of the Real Sociedad midfielder and the Gunners are preparing to renew their interest in the player this winter.
Zubimendi turned down an exit from Sociedad in the summer, after rejecting a move to Liverpool. The Reds informed Sociedad of their intention to meet Zubimendi’s €60m release clause but the 25-year-old opted against leaving San Sebastien.
Manchester City are prepared to offer Zubimendi another opportunity to move to the Premier League, as the Citizens target a replacement for the injured Rodri. Pep Guardiola is keen to strengthen his squad in January with the Premier League champions five points off the pace in the title race.
However, The Independent are reporting that Arsenal are also involved. The North London side want to add a number six to their options and are keen to reunite Zubimendi with Mikel Merino, who left Real Sociedad for the Emirates in the summer.
Arsenal have had a mixed start to the season and currently sit fourth in the Premier League table, nine points behind leaders Liverpool.
The latter could also renew their interest should Zubimendi suggest he is ready to leave the Spanish side. However, Ryan Gravenberch’s impressive emergence has lessened Liverpool’s need for a defensive midfielder.
