Brighton produced a far sharper performance at Villa Park but lost 1-0 to a late corner that deflected in off Jack Hinshelwood. The defeat came three days after their Crystal Palace collapse, against a Villa side who ended Wednesday third, six points behind Arsenal.

According to WeAreBrighton.com, Ferdi Kadioglu topped supporter ratings with 6.71 after reverting to left-back, with Harry Howell next on 6.43 from a lively cameo.

Carlos Baleba was booked inside the first minute and withdrawn around the 25th, James Milner replacing him to equal Gareth Barry’s Premier League appearance record. In a tight first half, Bart Verbruggen saved from Morgan Rogers and Jadon Sancho, and Emiliano Martinez tipped Kadioglu’s strike onto the bar.

Joel Veltman’s recall at right-back coincided with greater defensive control. Jan Paul van Hecke limited Ollie Watkins before making a pre-planned exit on the hour for Olivier Boscagli, mindful of the hamstring issue that kept him out at Palace.

After the interval Verbruggen had little serious work, yet Brighton were punished late from a corner, the winner later recorded as a Hinshelwood own goal after initial suggestions Tyrone Mings had scored. Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh looked short of sharpness, while Danny Welbeck saw scant service.
