It took a while to see the breakthrough for Aston Villa. After Unai Emery once again went to the depth of his bench, his changeup proved to be the winning difference in what could have easily ended in a draw as it was looking to potentially be until the final 20 minutes at Villa Park.

During the 3-0 win over Southampton, a lot of frustration was building up from the AVFC perspective. Fortunately for Emery, the Spaniard knows that he can always rely on Youri Tielemans. The midfielder not only put in another excellent shift but then found Ollie Watkins on a perfectly weighted through ball to give Villa the 1-0 lead.

This was then matched moments later in something more of a team buildup as the ball that started on the right with Matty Cash found itself to Morgan Rogers, who had received it from Amadou Onana. Donyell Malen did an excellent job of keeping his spacing in a way to be away from the defenders while giving Rogers an easy enough window for the final ball. The Dutchman then slotted it home and once again showed his class in a reserve role.

For all of the talent that is on Villa's squad, it ended up being the three substitutes who made the ultimate difference against the Saints. As Marco Asensio missed his second penalty take of the day, John McGinn showed himself to be alert and scored the third AVFC goal off the rebound from Aaron Ramsdale's save.

Emery does it again for Aston Villa

A lot is made of who starts and where they should play, and that should be the case. After all, there is a lot of talent on this side that would be able to comfortably make the starting XI on a consistent basis at other clubs. More often than not, however, Emery does an excellent job of assessing who is struggling the most on the particular day and then bringing on the right person to make the winning difference.

Aston Villa plays PSG at Villa Park on Tuesday. They know what can happen against that talented Ligue 1 side. Saturday proved to be an excellent way for the Villans to regain their confidence and find their form again. Villa fans will hope that the attack can look just as strong as it did in the closing stages of this Premier League game against a strong French team in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals next week.
