Some noted how the Champions League Team of the Week failed to include the Aston Villa-PSG Player of the Match from the second leg. Although that's perhaps a discussion for another day, the selected 11 did feature two deserving Villa players.
John McGinn and Ezri Konsa made the CL lineup of distinction following the AVFC exit from the competition. Each provided a goal in the win. They provided an overall complete performance, playing a huge part in the near comeback.
From the captain, McGinn willed his side back into the quarter-finals through his leadership. Oftentimes, it takes someone stepping up and grabbing the game for themselves, inspiring teammates to follow suit. That's what the Villa skipper showcased throughout the match.
The goal came from a moment of him actively looking to be dangerous, and the midfielder took his chance in what ended up being a spectacular goal. Luis Enrique mentioned afterward how difficult the Villans made it for them, compared to the rest of their opponents so far, and this was in large part due to the work rate of the Scottish international.
Then from the center-back, Konsa not only stood up time and time again against an impressive PSG attack but also got involved moving forward as well. His goal off the Marcus Rashford pass fully energized Villa Park and supporters everywhere that Unai Emery's side would be able to get it done.
Then the near miss off a header that could have brought the aggregate draw showed how close Villa were to completing what was once seen as too much of an insurmountable task. For both players, being included here will likely be seen as something of a nice recognition. They did, after all, have great games.
Certainly, if asked, in a heartbeat, they would give up being in this XI for being able to take part in the semi-finals. For this year, Villa showed what they are capable of. With players such as McGinn and Konsa serving as the backbone of this squad, Aston Villa can feel confident of qualifying for the competition again and making another deep run in the years to come.
