Bayern Munich’s round of 16 Champions League clash with Atalanta may already be settled.
The Bavarians took home a convincing 6-1 win in Bergamo with a dominant display at the New Balance Arena.
Michael Olise, FC Bayern’s sharpest knife in Italy, picked up three goal contributions as Vincent Kompany’s men glided to their 34th win in all competitions in the 2025/26 season.
It’s worth pre-empting any post-match analysis by first noting that this was an Atalanta side that overturned a two-goal deficit in Dortmund in their playoff clash. And overturned it convincingly with a 4-1 win in home territory after succumbing to a 2-0 defeat at Signal Iduna Park.
What followed in the round of 16, however, was a sharp reminder of the sheer gulf between Kompany’s Die Roten and Niko Kovac’s runners-up-in-waiting.
A 25-minute blitz in the first half of action in Bergamo saw Michael Olise and Serge Gnabry dominate proceedings.
The demolition job was kicked off first with a smart corner-kick routine that saw the ball played short to the Germany international, who then proceeded to supply Josip Stanisic for a tap-in.
Michael Olise then later cut in on his favoured left outside the box before whipping the ball beyond goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi’s reach.
Once Gnabry struck, as Olise turned provider, the tie was already, in truth, dead and buried at the 25-minute mark.
Nicolas Jackson and Jamal Musiala also joined the scoresheet, either side of an almost carbon-copy of Michael Olise’s first-half goal.
But there was heartbreak in amongst the jubilation for Munich as Alphonso Davies (who had assisted Olise’s second goal) suffered an injury 24 minutes after arriving on to the pitch. The Candian was spotted leaving the pitch in tears as he was withdrawn for Tom Bischof.
Michael Olise will miss the return leg at the Allianz Arena after picking up a yellow card.
