Arsenal travel to Bergamo for their first-ever clash with Serie A’s Atalanta and as part of the new Champions League format will be playing on Thursday evening.
The Gunners will be looking to carry the momentum of their North London Derby win into the Champions League and Mikel Arteta’s side are aiming to extend their unbeaten run so far this campaign.
The Italians earned their place in Europe’s top competition following their Europa League triumph last May, as an Ademola Lookman hat-trick inspired Atalanta to a historic victory over Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen.
Arsenal will continue to be without the services of captain Martin Odegaard due to an ankle injury, but Declan Rice and Riccardo Calafiori are both available for selection again.
Atalanta: WLLW
Atalanta have endured a mixed bag of results this term with two wins and two losses in Serie A and the Bergamo-based outfit will be hoping to iron out those inconsistencies, starting with Thursday’s game against Arsenal.
They put four past Lecce without reply on opening day but fell to consecutive defeats at Torino and Inter, with the performance away at the San Siro particularly concerning considering the manner of the 4-0 thrashing.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s front three of Charles de Ketelaere, Ademola Lookman and Mateo Retegui were on song in their last match, however, a 3-2 home win against Fiorentina.
All three forwards scored and interchanged well and Lookman marked his inclusion on the Ballon d’Or shortlist with another influential display.
Arsenal: WWDW
Arsenal are yet to lose this season and have only conceded once, but Atalanta will pose a different sort of challenge.
Mikel Arteta has re-established the North London club as a Champions League outfit and after getting knocked out by Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals in 2023/24, the Spaniard will be hoping to go further this time around.
Three clean sheets from four Premier League games highlight their strength defensively and Arteta has built the foundations of his team on a reliable backline.
