La Liga giants Atlético Madrid have not been at all rewarded for their efforts in securing a top-8 place in the Champions League.

This comes amid confirmation that Diego Simeone’s troops are facing up to what will likely be a daunting test in the competition’s Last-16.

Atlético are fresh off another dominant victory on the continent a short time ago.

After making the trip to Austria for a meeting with RB Salzburg, the Rojiblancos ultimately emerged on the right side of a 4-1 result.

As much has culminated in an impressive 5th-placed finish in the newly-formatted league phase in the Champions League.

Safe to say, however, that Atlético’s solid European campaign to date does not look set to be rewarded.

As a consequence of the new playoff system, the capital outfit are aware that they will be forced to face up to a tie with one of the following clubs in the Champions League’s Last-16:
