Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez has taken a dramatic twist after Atletico Madrid have decided to escalate the matter and prepare legal action over the Catalan club’s alleged conduct during the transfer saga.

The latest developments come shortly after Alvarez publicly admitted that he wants to leave Atletico Madrid, a statement that intensified speculation surrounding a possible move to Barcelona

However, rather than opening negotiations, the comments appear to have escalated tensions between the two clubs to a new level.

According to AS, Atletico Madrid are now preparing to take their complaints to FIFA’s sporting authorities, believing Barcelona have crossed the line while pursuing a player who remains under contract until 2030.

Atletico Madrid threaten legal action

After the Argentine forward stated that a transfer would be the best outcome and spoke about wanting to fulfil his dream, Atletico officials became convinced that Barcelona had played a role behind the scenes.

Club sources speaking to AS did not hide their frustration and pointed to previous disputes involving Barcelona and transfer negotiations.

“We’ve already seen how Barcelona operates in the past.”

The outlet adds that Atletico remain furious about historical transfer situations involving former striker Antoine Griezmann and believe similar tactics are being repeated.

Club representatives also made their position crystal clear regarding Alvarez’s future, stating,

“There is no amount for which Barcelona can buy Julian, who will not be transferred to Barcelona.”

More to the story

While Barcelona continue to be linked with the Argentine international, Atletico Madrid are refusing to entertain any discussions regarding a transfer fee.

Instead, club officials maintain that only one route exists for Alvarez to leave. “Either they pay the buyout clause (of 500 million) or nothing.”

The Madrid-based club also believes Barcelona have attempted similar strategies in previous transfer windows.

“Barcelona has played this game before on several occasions. Just last summer, with Nico Williams.”

Atletico feel that recent reports emerging from Barcelona-linked circles suggested that Alvarez’s public statement was expected, increasing their suspicion that the situation was being orchestrated.

Despite those concerns, there remains no public evidence linking Barcelona directly to the player’s comments.

So what now?

The story has now moved beyond a standard transfer rumour and evolved into a conflict between two of Spain’s biggest clubs.

Right now, Alvarez remains one of the most attractive attacking options available on the market for Barcelona

However, Atletico Madrid’s response shows that any potential deal will be extremely difficult.

Even if Alvarez continues pushing for an exit, Barcelona may now face legal scrutiny, public resistance from Atletico and an enormous financial barrier due to the player’s release clause.
