Atletico president not bothered by poor UCL record vs Real Madrid – ‘Anything can happen’ | OneFootball

The two Madrid derbies between Real and Atletico so far this season have both ended in draws, but two more clashes await the two Spanish capital teams in the coming weeks.

Real Madrid play host to their neighbours later this week in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie and will look to secure a big lead to take into the game at the Metropolitano.

The game at the Santiago Bernabeu tomorrow night, thus, becomes crucial for Real Madrid especially given how they are coming fresh off a defeat.

Facing the press ahead of his team’s clash against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo spoke on his team’s chances of pulling off a win over two legs, the historic record between the two sides, and other related topics.

He began by speaking on his team’s mentality heading into the gargantuan clash against Real Madrid and what their objective will be.

“We always go out to win on any pitch and in this one too, of course too. It’s a Champions League match and our goal is to move to the quarterfinals to be among the eight best teams in Europe and that’s what interests us,” he said.

Cerezo was then reminded that Atletico Madrid have never eliminated Real Madrid from the UEFA Champions League, a fact he refused to read too much into.

“In football, anything can happen and anyone can win. Let’s hope we have a good game and they don’t and that we can take the victory.”

Finally, the Colchoneros’ president was asked about the La Liga title race in which his team are just behind leaders Barcelona but ahead of Real Madrid.

“Normally at this point, there would be only one candidate and now there are three. Anything can happen at any time. There are games that are lost and we will also lose games,” he began.

“We have to wait until the end to be able to see what happens. In any case, everything is very fair and anyone who fails will have fewer chances,” he added.
