A member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Atlético Madrid has moved to reiterate the significance of his side’s victory over arch rivals Real on Saturday.

This of course comes fresh off a Madrid Derby for the ages yesterday evening.

Atlético acted as hosts for the season’s first meeting between Spanish football’s two capital heavyweights, welcoming Xabi Alonso’s La Liga table-toppers to the Metropolitano.

And despite the latter taking a 2-1 first-half lead, it was Diego Simeone’s hosts who had the last laugh.

Staging a remarkable comeback, Atléti ultimately emerged on the right side of a 5-2 result.

Playing a leading role in as much was Rojiblancos captain Koke, who carved out a brilliant assist for his side’s timely equaliser on the stroke of the interval.

And speaking to the media in the game’s aftermath, the midfielder could not talk up the significance of Atlético’s triumph enough:

”Today’s derby will go down in history.”
