At the start of 2025, Augsburg’s Finn Dahmen had made just one Bundesliga appearance this season - a home defeat to VfB Stuttgart – since then, he’s been arguably the most in-form goalkeeper in Germany.
For a time, it looked as if this might be a season to forget for Augsburg goalkeeper Dahmen. The 26-year-old came into the 2024/25 campaign injured, resulting in him losing his starting berth to Nediljko Labrović. When he did return, it was in a backup role from Matchday 3. A second injury, sustained in early December, even cost him his place on the bench for further fixtures.
But Dahmen’s return to fitness following Augsburg's 5-1 away defeat to Holstein Kiel on Matchday 14 couldn’t have been timed better. Coach Jess Thorup decided to make a switch and, since then, the Wiesbaden native has been one of the best goalkeepers in Germany’s top flight.
Following a 1-0 defeat to Stuttgart in his first game back, Augsburg have been unbeaten in eight subsequent matches, all of which came with Dahmen between the sticks. The goalkeeper has played a crucial role in that run, keeping six clean sheets – more than anyone else in the Bundesliga during that period. Following last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Freiburg, a fourth clean sheet in a row, Thorup singled out his goalkeeper for special praise.
"With Finn, you've seen in recent weeks what confidence means for a goalkeeper. And together with the whole team, we're doing very well against the ball at the moment," he said. “I'm happy for Finn because it wasn't easy for him last year. He has put in some excellent performances since the winter break.”
While his defenders have undoubtedly played their part in that success, Dahmen’s input cannot be understated. His save percentage since returning to the side has been 90.6 percent. No other custodian has come close to matching him, with Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Moritz Nicolas the closest with 78.3 percent.
Dahmen has long been considered one of the brightest goalkeeping prospects in the country. He represented Germany at various youth levels, he was the first-choice goalkeeper as the U21s lifted the UEFA European Championship in 2021.
He made his Bundesliga debut in January 2021, aged 22, as Mainz lost 5-2 away to Bayern Munich. Following that baptism of fire, he made a further 12 league appearances for the Carnival club before joining Augsburg in the summer of 2023. He played 31 times in his debut campaign before sustaining the ligament injury that kept him out in the early weeks of this season too.
Fit again and in the form of his life, it seems only a matter of time before Dahmen’s name is being thrown into the ring for a senior Germany call up. The national team may be on the lookout for a new No.1, following the retirement of Manuel Neuer and recent injury woes of Marc-André ter Stegen.
Failure to give Dahmen opportunities could lead to another nation stealing him away. Dahmen has an English mother, and hasn’t commented either way on the possibility of representing the Three Lions.
