According to Mundo Deportivo, Jofre Torrents is set to join AFC Ajax on loan after FC Barcelona and the Dutch club reached an agreement, with only the final administrative details remaining before the move is officially announced.

The highly-rated 19-year-old left-back is regarded as one of the club’s brightest academy prospects, and Barça believe a season in the Eredivisie will provide the ideal environment for his development.

A carefully planned loan move

Ajax first expressed interest in signing Torrents on loan toward the end of last season, and Barcelona viewed the proposal as an attractive opportunity.

Although the defender made his first-team debut last season, breaking into Hansi Flick’s squad on a regular basis is expected to be difficult due to the competition in his position.

A move to Ajax offers him the chance to gain valuable senior experience while continuing his progression.

The youngster will also reunite with Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who recently joined the Dutch club on a season-long loan as well.

Flick rates Torrents highly

Torrents was already one of the standout performers during last summer’s pre-season before making his La Liga debut on the opening day of the campaign against Mallorca.

The teenage left-back was one of the academy players who received the most opportunities during Barcelona’s pre-season training camp at St George’s Park this summer as well.

He started at left-back in the recent friendly against Birmingham City, stepping in while Alejandro Balde was unavailable through injury and Gerard Martin was deployed in central defense.

His performances throughout pre-season have further strengthened Flick’s confidence in the defender.

Competition for spots

Despite the coaching staff’s faith in Torrents, the pathway to regular first-team football remains challenging.

Barcelona are expected to complete the signing of Joao Cancelo, adding another established option in the full-back positions. That arrival would significantly reduce Torrents’ chances of consistent minutes with the senior squad.

At the same time, the Catalans believe he has already outgrown Barça Atletic, making a loan the most suitable next step.

Barcelona have no intention of losing control of one of their most promising young defenders.

As such, the Blaugrana see the Ajax loan as another important stage in Torrents’ development, expecting him to return with valuable top-level experience and ready to compete for a place in the first team in the future.
