Barcelona are reportedly looking to bring in left winger this summer, although following the arrival of Anthony Gordon, it would seem to be a duplication of resources, particularly if a centre-forward also arrives. Provided Raphinha remains at the club, then there will be little need for any fresh additions.
After it emerged that Barcelona were not 100% committed to activating Marcus Rashford’s €30m buy clause, a number of names emerged as potentially more economic alternatives. Among those were Real Betis’ Ez Abde, Spain winger Victor Munoz, and former La Masia product Jan Virgili.
It was reported earlier this week that Barcelona Sporting Director Deco had met with Virgili’s agents, which sparked speculation that he could head back to Camp Nou. Yet Marca report that Barcelona did not express a desire to activate his release clause or re-sign Virgili, but were simply receiving an update on his situation. The possibility of signing Virgili and selling him on at a profit is still being considered, but no decision has been taken.
In terms of a potential return to the first team, Barcelona feel they are now well-covered for the left-wing spot after the arrival of Gordon. Virgili’s future elsewhere was discussed, as were other players.
The 19-year-old winger left Barcelona last summer for €3.5m, after being told there was no spot for him the first team, joining RCD Mallorca. While it was a positive season for Virgili on a personal level, Los Bermellones were relegated. It has reduced his release clause from €30m to just €12m, and given Barcelona still hold a sell-on fee percentage of 40%, Barcelona can bring him back for just €7.2m. Were another club to activate his release clause, Barcelona would stand to make €4.8m from the sale.
