Although Barcelona face Villarreal this weekend in La Liga, all eyes are on Tuesday’s crucial clash against Atletico Madrid at the Spotify Camp Nou.

The Blaugrana take on Diego Simeone’s side in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal, going into the game with a significant disadvantage.

After all, they were hammered 4-0 by Atletico in the first leg earlier this month at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, leaving Hansi Flick & co. with a mountain to climb.

Gerard Martin believes in comeback

However, despite their situation, the mood in the Barcelona camp is quite confident, with there being a strong belief in the possibility of a comeback against the Rojiblancos.

Key winger Raphinha conveyed as much in an interview earlier today, and his sentiments have now been echoed by Barcelona defender Gerard Martin.

Speaking at an event organised by the Johan Cruyff Foundation in his hometown today, the left-back shared the belief inside the Barça dressing room.

“We’re convinced we can come back. We’ll go out to do it, especially at home with our fans. If there’s any team that can do it, it’s Barça,” he said.

The club presidential elections are the talk of the town in Barcelona currently, and Martin was asked if he was keeping up with the campaigning by the candidates, including Joan Laporta.

“We’re approaching it calmly. Right now he can’t be with us, but I hope he will be soon,” he commented, subtly suggesting his preference of wanting Laporta back – a sentiment shared by the majority of the players.

The defender also downplayed the controversial refereeing decision in the 2-1 loss to Girona at Estadi Montilivi, later acknowledged by the Referees Technical Committee (CTA).

“There will always be mistakes. That one was strange, but we’re top of the league and we want to stay there. That day I was more annoyed about our performance than about the error,” he explained.

“When there are mistakes, one team benefits and another suffers. That’s football.”

Gerard, who turns 24 this Thursday, shared his birthday wish with a smile: “For my birthday, I ask to win everything.”
