Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has decided not to undergo surgery to fix his injury issues, according to Spanish news outlet SPORT.
The 18-year-old has reportedly been struggling with pubalgia – a painful condition that affects the groin area and can limit movement and stamina.
He played through the injury during the 2-1 defeat against Real Madrid in the heated El Clasico. While he managed to show flashes of his natural talent, the discomfort held him back.
Despite not performing at maximum capacity, Yamal played 90 minutes of football against Madrid, with Hansi Flick still keeping faith with the “special” winger.
Yamal has admitted that he’s not at full fitness, but he has refused to go under the knife for now. He wants to monitor his recovery closely while relying on conservative treatment.
The La Masia prodigy is keen to push through the pain for the coming weeks and will only consider surgery if the condition doesn’t improve.
He could be out for a while if he undergoes surgery, and it would be a huge blow for Barcelona, considering they’ve already ruled out bringing in reinforcements in January.
Yamal has also sought out second opinions outside the Barcelona doctors to understand his options better.
However, it is believed that these consultations are routine, and the goal is to make sure that the pain doesn’t exceed the normal recovery period.
Aware of his situation, the Barcelona coaching staff have slightly tweaked his training routine to avoid making the injury any worse.
He’s now more focused on maintaining fitness rather than going through any intense session.
Yamal has featured eight times for Barcelona this season across La Liga and the Champions League, scoring three times and weighing in with a further five assists.
He has also created three big chances in the league and is averaging two key passes per 90 minutes.
Interestingly, Barcelona legend Lionel Messi also struggled with pubalgia earlier in his career. He managed to get through it without surgery, and Yamal is hoping to follow a similar path.
