Marcus Rashford has made the most of his opportunity since joining FC Barcelona on loan from Manchester United in the summer.

The 28-year-old attacker has racked up ten goals and 13 assists from 34 matches in all competitions, despite not always being a regular starter.

The England star’s performances have won over those at Barcelona, so much so that the decision has been made to sign him permanently in the summer by activating the €30 million purchase option.

Uncertainty remains over Rashford’s future

However, according to The Times (h/t SPORT), Rashford’s future as a Barcelona player also depends on the outcome of the presidential elections, which will be held on 15 March.

The outgoing Barcelona board, led by Joan Laporta and with Deco as the top executive in the sporting area, decided to stick to the original plan agreed when the loan from Manchester United was secured.

If there are no physical setbacks or an unthinkable short-term sporting decline, the club intend to exercise the purchase option, and Rashford would sign a further three-year contract with Barcelona.

They consider that the €30 million, given the player’s performance, represents a market figure that is manageable for the club’s finances.

Rashford’s willingness to adapt his salary to Barcelona’s economic situation and to the dressing room’s wage limits is also a major positive factor.

However, it must be noted that one of the pre-candidates in the election race, Victor Font, has already made it clear that he would not retain Deco, who was a key figure in Rashford’s signing.

And while he has backed Flick to continue as manager, the German himself might think twice about staying if Laporta does not return as president.

While the position of other pre-candidates like Marc Ciria, Xavi Vilajoana, and Joan Camprubi is still unclear, the outcome of the presidential elections could end up changing things at the club, impacting Rashford’s continuity beyond the season.
