FC Barcelona continue to reap the rewards of La Masia, an academy capable of producing midfielders as different as Gavi, Marc Bernal, and Fermin Lopez. All three operate in similar areas of the pitch, yet each offers a completely distinct profile. That variety is one of the great strengths of Barça’s current squad.

Among them, Fermin Lopez stands out as something of an exception to the traditional La Masia mould. Technically gifted and tactically intelligent, he also brings an edge that is not commonly associated with academy midfielders. His work rate without the ball, combined with an outstanding long-range shot, makes him a rare and complete package.

This season has marked a significant leap forward for the Andalusian. Despite suffering two separate injuries that have interrupted his rhythm and limited his appearances, Fermin has already recorded 20 direct goal contributions across all competitions.

He has scored ten goals and provided ten assists in La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup, and the Champions League, surpassing his total output from last season and comfortably improving on his first campaign with the first team. At 25 matches played, it is statistically the most efficient season of his career so far.

Only Ferran Torres, Lewandowski, and Raphinha have scored more goals for Barcelona this season, underlining Fermin’s growing importance in the final third. His latest reminder of that quality came in Europe against Slavia Prague, where he scored twice, including a superb strike from medium distance that once again showcased his exceptional shooting technique.

According to SPORT, Fermin is currently the most productive midfielder across LaLiga, the Premier League, and Serie A. His 20-goal contributions place him ahead of Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, who has registered 16 while also being his team’s primary penalty taker. Behind them, Arda Guler, Nico Paz, and Phil Foden are all level on 14 contributions, though each required significantly more matches than the Barça midfielder to reach that figure.

Fermín also belongs to an exclusive group of only four players across Europe’s top five leagues to reach double figures in both goals and assists this season. The others are Luis Díaz, Michael Olise, and Lamine Yamal.

Barcelona having two players on this list is a clear reflection of the attacking clarity and chance creation fostered under Hansi Flick, whose system continues to bring the best out of his midfielders.

There are still areas for growth. The next step for Fermin is to maintain this level of influence over longer stretches of the season rather than producing his numbers in short bursts. If he manages that consistency, he will inevitably enter the conversation among the very best midfielders in world football.

With performances like these, it is no surprise that Barcelona have already moved swiftly to renew his contract and secure his future. Fermin Lopez is no longer just a promising academy graduate. He is becoming a central pillar of Barça’s present and its future.
