Barcelona are still working towards signing Julian Alvarez, but given Atletico Madrid’s hard-line stance, it won’t be easy to get a deal done. As such, alternatives have been lined up in recent months, both low and high-cost options.

One of the players to fall into the former category is Fisnik Asllani. Earlier in the season, Barcelona were credited with an interest in the Hoffenheim forward, who had a fine first full campaign in the Bundesliga as he notched 10 goals and seven assists in 33 appearances. However, his form also attracted other clubs, among them Borussia Dortmund.

And it is Hoffenheim’s fellow Bundesliga side that have seemingly won the race to sign Asllani. According to reports in Germany (via Sport), Dortmund have agreed personal terms with the Kosovo international, and they will now proceed to pay his €30m release clause.

Asllani, who previously spoke out about his dream to play for Barcelona, was seen as a very interesting offices by those in the Can Barca offices. At 23, he was seen as someone that could play a big role in Hansi Flick’s squad, with the potential to become even better in the years to come, although he will do that in Dortmund now.

Barcelona running out of Alvarez alternatives

Given that it’s far from certain that Barcelona will be able to convince Atleti to sell Alvarez this summer, it is a problem for the Catalans that their alternatives are slipping away. They were already informed that Harry Kane would not be interested in joining, and now they must contend themselves with missing out on Asllani.

For now, there will not be too much disappointment from the likes of sporting director Deco, whose focus remains on Alvarez. However, if that deal becomes impossible, he could be left scrambling for an alternative to the Argentine.
