Barcelona move for Premier League winger gains weight as Flick, Deco, Laporta all in agreement | OneFootball

Barcelona are making serious progress in their pursuit of Anthony Gordon, with a growing belief that the Newcastle United attacker could become one of the smartest signings of the summer.

According to fresh reports from Matteo Moretto, Barcelona president Joan Laporta, sporting director Deco and manager Hansi Flick are all aligned in their idea that Gordon possesses enormous upside and fits the profile the club is searching for.

According to the journalist, the Catalan giants have intensified contacts with Newcastle United in recent days, with negotiations between the two clubs now underway.

An important trip to England

Deco’s recent trip to England alongside Bojan Krkic and Joao Amaral was focused heavily on advancing discussions surrounding the versatile forward. 

Importantly for Barcelona, Newcastle are now believed to be open to selling the England international this summer if the right proposal arrives.

That development has encouraged Barça, especially after the club accepted that moves for Julian Alvarez and Joao Pedro had become almost impossible financially and structurally.

Barcelona now see Gordon as a more realistic operation while still offering top-level potential and tactical flexibility.

Notably, the English attacker has attracted strong interest across Europe, with Liverpool and FC Bayern Munich both closely monitoring his situation. 

Despite those approaches, however, Gordon has placed Barcelona at the top of his priorities after recent conversations with the club’s representatives.

One of the biggest reasons Barcelona are pushing so strongly for Gordon is his versatility across the frontline.

The 25-year-old is capable of playing on the left wing, operating centrally as a false nine and even adapting to more fluid attacking systems under Hansi Flick.

This is why Barcelona feel the England international can immediately strengthen multiple attacking positions at once. 

Financially, Newcastle valued Gordon at around €85-90 million earlier, but Barça are hopeful that negotiations can eventually settle closer to the €70 million mark.

That figure is still significant, but considerably more manageable than the enormous costs involved in trying to sign Alvarez or Joao Pedro.
