Barcelona’s long-running pursuit of Julian Alvarez could finally be heading towards a decisive moment after the Argentine forward publicly opened the door to a summer departure from Atletico Madrid.

For weeks, reports have suggested that the striker had privately informed Atletico officials of his desire to seek a new challenge. 

Barcelona, meanwhile, have continued to monitor the situation closely, believing that any move would depend on the player making his intentions clear in public.

Now, that moment appears to have arrived.

Alvarez breaks silence on Atletico Madrid future

Speaking after Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria at the World Cup, Alvarez delivered the strongest indication yet that his time at Atletico Madrid may be coming to an end.

The forward did not hide his feelings when discussing what comes next in his career. Explaining his position, he stated,

“The best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream.”

Alvarez went on to reveal that conversations have already taken place behind the scenes with Atletico Madrid officials.

“This isn’t the time to talk about this, but I can’t hide either. I try to be an honest person, and I’ve already spoken with the club officials and the people I needed to talk to,” he noted, according to AS.

Those remarks are likely to increase pressure on Atletico Madrid, who have so far remained firm regarding the player’s future despite growing transfer interest from several European giants.

Barcelona remain attentive

Barcelona’s admiration for Alvarez is no secret. The Catalan club view the Argentine as one of the elite forwards capable of leading their attack for years to come.

Notably, Barcelona already attempted to test Atletico Madrid’s resolve earlier in the transfer window. 

A proposal worth €100 million was submitted, but the offer failed to generate any meaningful response from the Madrid-based club.

The communication came through sporting director Deco, who contacted Atletico executive Mateu Alemany to outline Barcelona’s intentions and financial proposal.

Despite that approach, Atletico Madrid refused to entertain negotiations, maintaining their stance that Alvarez is not available for transfer.

However, the situation may now be changing, as public comments from a player often carry significant weight during transfer sagas, and Alvarez’s statements have made it difficult to ignore the possibility of a departure.
