The summer transfer window has just been blown wide open. Julian Alvarez is once again the name on everyone’s lips. This time, the market is in absolute meltdown. A bombshell report from El Chiringuito has sent shockwaves through European football, claiming Arsenal and Atletico Madrid have shaken hands on a staggering player-plus-cash swap deal.
The Gunners mean business. They are reportedly ready to sanction a €50m cash outlay. Throwing prolific Swedish marksman Viktor Gyokeres into the bargain makes it a blockbuster proposal. It’s a massive statement of intent. Naturally, the drama doesn’t end there. Noted reporter Jota Jordi claims Atletico CEO Gil Marin personally rang Barcelona chief Joan Laporta. The message? A firm, unyielding hands-off warning. Alvarez is simply not for sale.
Catalan ambitions aren’t easily dampened, though. Spanish outlet Sport, via Barca Blaugranes, claims a massive counter-offensive is already brewing in Barcelona. The hierarchy is reportedly putting the finishing touches on a breathtaking €135m bid. They want to table this offer the exact moment the current World Cup wraps up in North America. Add-ons could see the total package balloon to an eye-watering €150m. Camp Nou executives are convinced Atletico will eventually buckle. For now, everything stays on ice until international duties finish.

Splurging €135m on a single player is complete madness. Look at the club’s finances. They are walking a tightrope. Hansi Flick obviously needs a long-term successor to the departed Robert Lewandowski, but blowing the entire war chest on a position where they already have young depth feels entirely short-sighted.
The squad is crying out for elite defensive midfielders. Without them, there is no tactical balance. Spending this sort of cash leaves other gaping holes totally exposed. Flick needs intense pressing. He demands physical dominance. The diminutive Argentine is a proper option, certainly. But paying a premium to a direct La Liga rival is economically irresponsible. Chasing superstar names won’t fix the deep structural flaws in this team.
Barcelona must prioritise their threadbare midfield. Stop accumulating expensive forwards. Anthony Gordon has already arrived for big money. Shoving another astronomical wage packet onto the books could completely paralyse their ability to register players. Flick needs balanced recruitment to compete on all fronts. Throwing €150m at Madrid looks like an emotional, panicked reaction to Arsenal’s aggressive manoeuvring. It isn’t a calculated football decision.
