Barcelona receive Atlético complaint in Julián Álvarez case

Barcelona have been formally notified of Atlético Madrid’s complaint in the Julián Álvarez case, alleging talks with the forward despite his contract at the Metropolitano running to 2030. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the complaint was lodged with the Spanish federation and FIFA.

The RFEF, led by Rafael Louzán, has opened a case and given Barcelona several days to submit their arguments. The club’s lawyers are reviewing the file and intend to respond.

In mid June, Miguel Ángel Gil said Atlético would defend their interests by reporting Barcelona to FIFA for negotiating with a player under contract during the protected period. The club formalised that step weeks later and the papers have now been passed to Barcelona.

At Barcelona, the view is that the complaint has little prospect. They note the player publicly signalled a desire to move and to fulfil his dream, and that days later an offer worth 100 million euros was lodged, which will expire soon. Atlético acknowledge the filing is based on indications rather than proof of contact between Barcelona and Julián Álvarez.

Álvarez remains the priority for the sporting department led by Deco to strengthen the number nine role in Hansi Flick’s team. Atlético have said publicly they do not wish to negotiate with Barcelona. The World Cup finalist is due to report for pre-season with Simeone on 10 August.

Another gesture from the player could help unlock a move, although the deal still looks highly complex. Barcelona are exploring alternatives to ensure a replacement for Robert Lewandowski this summer.
