Barcelona are continuing efforts to raise funds before the 2025-26 financial year officially closes on the 30th June, as they aim to finally return to La Liga’s 1:1 rule. Work is being done to move on players that do not count for head coach Hansi Flick, with one of those being Inaki Pena, whose time in Catalonia is coming to an end.

Pena, who joined Barcelona at 13 years of age in 2012, has been out of the reckoning at Barcelona for some time. He had been a starter for several months during the 2024-25 season as a result of Marc-Andre ter Stegen sustaining a serious injury, but since losing his place to Wojciech Szczesny, he has never got it back.

Last summer, Pena was loaned out to Elche, with whom he managed 16 appearances. He returned at the end of the season, but not for long, as he is about to complete a permanent move to Greek side Panathinaikos.

Last week, it was reported that a deal for Pena to head to Athens was at an advanced stage, and now, Matteo Moretto has reported that an agreement has been reached for the 27-year-old to bring down the curtain on his 14-year career in Barcelona.

Barcelona will receive €3m from Pena sale

Originally, it has been reported that Barcelona would forego a transfer fee as part of any deal to sell Pena, but in the end, Panathinaikos have agreed to pay €3m. The goalkeeper will now travel to Greece to undergo a medical, before signing his contract in the next 24-36 hours.

Pena’s sale was one that Barcelona need to get done as soon as possible, given the overbooking in the goalkeeping department. Club officials are hoping for at least one more exit in this area, with ter Stegen being the ideal candidate due to his excessive salary.
