Barcelona have been relatively quiet on the transfer front in recent weeks, although they are starting to spring back into life. They will make their next offer for Julian Alvarez after the 2026 World Cup is over, but before then, they have completed the signings of two highly-rated players.
Over the last 12 months in particular, Barcelona have focused more on signing quality young players to add into the La Masia setup as a way of promoting from within rather than spending big on new signings. It’s worked well with the likes of Gerard Martin and Hamza Abdelkarim in the last couple of years, and the club has now identified two more players that could follow this path.
As per MD, Tenerife sporting director Manu Guill has confirmed that they have sold two players to Barcelona: Joni Hernández and Juan Ybarra. In total, the Catalans have paid €600k for both, and they will join up with Barca Atletic for the 2026-27 season with a view to making the step up to the first team if they impress Hansi Flick.
€500k of the €600k spent as part of the agreement between Barcelona and Tenerife went on bringing Hernandez to Catalonia. The 18-year-old is considered to be one of the best academy product at the Segunda club, and as per Marca, he has amassed comparisons with Pedri, whom he could end up playing alongside in the years to come.
It will be interesting to see how both Hernandez and Ybarra get on at Barcelona. The former is much more likely to make a serious run at a first team promotion, although the final decision on whether either one does manage to break into the senior squad will be made by Flick, who always keeps an eye on La Masia.
