Barcelona are working to get Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s loan move to Ajax back on course after an unexpected financial complication threatened to derail what had appeared to be a straightforward agreement.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan club has presented a new proposal to the German goalkeeper after unresolved tax obligations delayed the approval of the transfer. 

The latest Barcelona transfer news suggests Ter Stegen is now viewing the revised offer positively, increasing optimism that the deal can finally move towards completion.

The transfer had been expected to progress smoothly after Barcelona, Ajax and the player reached broad agreements earlier in the summer. 

However, unexpected issues surrounding the structure of the goalkeeper’s salary temporarily brought negotiations to a standstill.

Barcelona step in after tax issue delays the move

The report states that the delay came from Ter Stegen’s concerns regarding the tax implications of certain components within his salary package for the season.

Barcelona have since intervened by presenting a counter-proposal that adjusts parts of the financial structure in an effort to help resolve the situation. 

The goalkeeper is reportedly considering the revised terms favourably, opening the door for the transfer.

Although the deal is advancing, the outlet assures that Ajax will not assume a significant portion of the goalkeeper’s wages. 

The Dutch club are expected to contribute less than €2 million towards his salary, with Barcelona covering the majority of his earnings under a contract that runs until 2028.

Importantly, the amount Barcelona pay will not be fixed. Instead, it will vary depending on Ter Stegen’s playing time during the loan spell, a condition Ajax requested after previous experiences with loan agreements.

Ajax remain patient

What initially appeared to be a routine loan has developed into one of the more complicated Barcelona transfer stories of the summer.

Last week, Barcelona publicly indicated that the remaining obstacle rested entirely with the player and his personal financial obligations. 

However, recognising that continued delays would benefit nobody, the club decided to become more actively involved by restructuring certain financial details to help facilitate the move.

Ajax have been surprised by the prolonged negotiations, believing that the principal terms had already been agreed and that only the formal documentation remained.

While the Eredivisie side have not imposed a strict deadline, they are also aware that the situation cannot remain unresolved indefinitely. 

Club officials are therefore preparing for multiple outcomes, including the possibility that the loan proceeds as expected or that it ultimately collapses.
