Former German international Lothar Matthaus said he is convinced that Harry Kane, a target for FC Barcelona, will renew his contract with Bayern Munich, which currently runs until 2027.

The 32-year-old England captain is one of the names on the Blaugrana’s radar for the summer as they look for a replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

In fact, one of the club’s presidential candidates, Xavi Vilajoana, has claimed that there have been contacts with the former Tottenham superstar’s camp over a move.

Matthaus tips Kane to renew

However, German icon Matthaus has tipped Kane to sign a new contract and remain at Bayern Munich for the foreseeable future.

“He has started to win titles, something he did not achieve in England. I do not see any reason why Harry Kane would leave the club or change environment,” Matthaus said on Sky (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

“He will renew. I am sure of that. And Bayern will do everything so that he renews,” he added.

Kane joined Bayern in 2023 and has been the top scorer in the two full seasons he has completed. He currently leads the scoring charts again this season, at a pace that could see him surpass the record of 41 goals set by Robert Lewandowski.

In 2025, Bayern won the Bundesliga and the Super Cup with Kane, and this season they lead the league by eight points over second-placed Borussia Dortmund. They are also in the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal and in the Round of 16 of the Champions League.

According to Matthaus, Kane understands the importance of having a coach such as Vincent Kompany, who fully trusts him, and a team that functions well.

“We do not know whether elsewhere he would shine as much, we do not know whether he would play as well as he does with Kompany,” Matthaus said.

As mentioned previously, in recent days, there has been talk of contacts between Barcelona and Kane’s entourage. However, the player claimed to have no knowledge of it.

Kane had the option of activating a clause, which expired in January, that would have allowed him to leave Bayern next summer for €65 million. He allowed the deadline to pass, which in Germany is seen as a sign of his willingness to remain at the Allianz Arena.
