Barcelona are weighing up a move to bring Jan Virgili back next summer after the 19-year-old’s breakout at Mallorca.
SPORT reports that Barcelona are monitoring the left winger closely and view a return as a realistic option for the next window. The club retained 40 per cent of his rights, which would reduce any fee, and agreed a matching right when he left their academy for Mallorca in a 4 million deal last summer.
Virgili has made Mallorca’s left flank his own and has been pivotal in keeping them outside the relegation places. In the recent league match against Sevilla he won a penalty and set up another goal. He had already impressed at the last U20 World Cup with Spain.
This is not a buy-back clause, it is a right of first refusal. If a 25 million offer arrives at Mallorca, Barcelona could match it and would have priority, though the player would still decide and he is under contract until 2030. His release clause is 30 million.
Even so, the club’s current idea is to buy Marcus Rashford, whose clause is also 30 million, and his form has them minded to pay Manchester United that figure. That stance could complicate any move for Virgili, who is nine years younger and would be cheaper. Barcelona also note that if another club pays 25 million or the clause, they would receive almost half.
