As reported earlier today, FC Barcelona, Girona, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen are close to finalising a three-way agreement for the goalkeeper’s loan exit.

Hansi Flick’s decision to start Joan Garcia in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 match vs Racing Santander on Thursday further clarified Marc-André ter Stegen’s situation at Barcelona.

The German coach had already warned last month in Guadalajara that the goalkeeper would only play that match, something that was confirmed at El Sardinero. This scenario has accelerated moves for a departure.

Girona to pay a very small share of Ter Stegen’s salary

Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, Girona will take on a very small portion of Ter Stegen’s salary that will come close to, but not reach, €1 million.

Earlier reports suggested that Barcelona captain was giving up a big share of his wages. But now, it is being claimed that the Blaugrana are offering maximum cooperation and will pay 90 per cent of the goalkeeper’s wages.

Ter Stegen still has two years remaining on his contract, which runs until 2028. He had hoped to play enough matches at Barcelona to convince Julian Nagelsmann to restore him as Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper.

However, last night’s game made it abundantly clear that the prospects of him getting any minutes are slim to none.

Given the situation, Ter Stegen has only been willing to consider the Girona option, prioritising his family situation and the possibility of remaining close to Barcelona in order to continue seeing his two children.

Now, Girona are finalising arrangements for the 33-year-old to arrive at Montilivi on loan until the end of the season.

Ter Stegen is now awaiting Barcelona’s permission so that he does not have to travel for the league match against Real Sociedad this Sunday.
