Barcelona to request €400m loan to complete work on Camp Nou

Barcelona are set to ask for a fresh line of credit, after meeting their current budget for the renovation of Camp Nou and the Espai Barca project. Originally, the Blaugrana asked for a €1.5b loan from Goldman Sachs in order to remodel their stadium and the area around the ground, including the bastketball stadium.

It was revealed last week that Barcelona had run out of money to continue rebuilding the stadium. As such, the Catalan giants will need to ask permission from club members to take out a fresh loan to continue the work. They have previously put the lengthy delays and rising costs down to factors beyond their control, including various global economic crises that have occurred due to wars.

In order to take out a fresh loan, Barcelona will need to vote on it at a General Assembly, which is yet to be set. Marca say the club must finalise their plans and explain the operation to their members before the vote. It is estimated that the extra credit will amount to €400m, taking the total projected cost to €1.9b. It will also push the club’s debt to close to €3b, but the loans for the stadium and Espai Barca project are long-term, and thus do not have to be paid off for a number of decades. Currently, Spotify Camp Nou is on track to be complete towards the end of 2027 or beginning of 2028.

Barcelona will likely have to leave Camp Nou next season

Given Barcelona will be unable to play at Camp Nou during the instalment of the roof, it seems likely the Catalan side will have to leave their ground again. Already the Blaugrana have spoken to the City Council about using Montjuic for the opening months of the 2027-28 season. Next season, they hope to have the third tier fully operational.
