Frenkie De Jong has injured his right hamstring in training and faces five to six weeks out. The Barcelona midfielder should miss the Champions League last 16.

It is another setback for Hansi Flick, with Pedri only just back in the 3-0 win over Levante on Sunday. L'Équipe reports that the Netherlands international, capped 64 times with 2 goals and a scorer last time out, sustained the issue in Thursday’s session.

The draw at midday on Friday will determine whether PSG or Newcastle are paired with the Catalans.

De Jong has been Hansi Flick’s most used midfielder this season, ahead of Pedri, Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo.

Flick must adapt from Saturday for a difficult match against Villarreal, who are third, with Real Madrid only one point behind. Options to start in De Jong’s place include Marc Bernal, Marc Casado or Dani Olmo. Eric Garcia, a utility option who has filled every defensive role since last season, is also an option.
