Marc Bernal is expected to recover from illness in time for Tuesday’s Champions League first leg at Newcastle, while Frenkie de Jong will miss out.
The teenager was withdrawn at half time at San Mames, with Hansi Flick saying he had problems during his 45 minutes. Sport reports the issue was illness, with stomach discomfort.
Bernal has travelled with the squad to Tyneside and should be able to train, though medical staff are likely to monitor him.
Barcelona beat Athletic Club on Saturday and now turn to St James’ Park, where they hope to repeat their league phase win. Flick and his players are already in England.
The midfield contest looks pivotal. Newcastle are without the injured Bruno Guimaraes, a boost for Barcelona. Flick has Pedri and Bernal at his disposal, and they are capable of getting the better of Sandro Tonali, Joelinton and others.
A small doubt still surrounds Bernal’s availability, though Barcelona remain confident he will feature.
