After last Thursday I’m happy to say the BBC has changed my name to Nobody, Absolutely Nobody. This is because BBCSports said Nobody Absolutely Nobody predicted last week’s game: but I have a request. Could I not change my name to Derek Nobody, Absolutely Nobody? It would make it a wee bit easier when I’m asked to throw out the trash, or my wife asks me for a wee romantic night out.
But anyway, last week’s match is finished. This is now the second half, and Fenerbahçe are no mugs. So, what does nobodypredict this time?
With Rangers being so dangerous on the break, and as I said last week their backline being a wee bit error prone, and also a bitnervy, Mourinho will look to Turkish international midfielder Ismail Yuksek to stabilize their back line. Ismail Yuksek is their version of Ryan Kent, and I predict he will be tasked with nullifying the threat coming from Dessers.
However, on the plus side Allan Saint-Maximin (who is one of Fenerbahçe’s youngsters at just 28 years old) did not travel to Glasgow, and after his curious post which said the truth will eventually come out, there are now questions about whether he is out injured, or if he had a major fallout with Mourinho, and there is discontent in the Fenerbahçe team.
Anyway, whatever the issue is, the absence of Allan Saint-Maximin means that Fenerbahçe has no natural left-sided winger.
And on the right wing they have either İrfan Can Kahveci, who is 29 years old, or Dušan Tadić who is 36 years old. As you can see, there is a lot of experience in this Fenerbahçe team, but their speed, and their endurance is starting to dip.
As I also highlighted last week, this is a team that needs a lot of shots on goal to score, and this week they are now weaker in attack, but they are now much stronger at the back, and though Mourinho likes the counter-attack, this Fenerbahçe does notreally have a sharp cutting edge, nor do they have the vertical advantage they thought they had one week ago.
With the return of the two tower blocks in Balogun and Souttar, this counters their very tall strikers. So, I think they will now try to take us apart on the deck; but this is where are wee midfield terrors in Barron and Raskin have the big advantage. So, this Rangers team is actually well set up to counter whatever Mourinho tries to do, and that is a problem for Mourinho.
In every football match the difference between winning and losing often comes down to exceptionally fine margins.
This Fenerbahçe team has a lot of experience and they also have the tactical genius of Mourinho, but just like last week Rangershas the edge.
It all comes down to the players on field, and how they react to those unexpected chances.
It is the Ibrox Stadium, and the lift we get from the noise that rains down on the players.
We have the advantage in terms of age.
We also now have that elusive fear factor. Teams in Europe now realize Rangers are just somehow different in Europe, and we now have a truly scary record, where we routinely beat teams with much larger budgets.
But now we have something very different. Something that is now rare in football.
We finally have a manager who knows how to talk to players.
In my view, Barry is far more than “a Manager”. He is a captain, who knows how to motivate his team.
He knows how to get his team to look around the park for options, and this is the biggie. He knows how to help histeammates.
Remember Souness? He was tough as nails, but when a teammate needed help, he sensed it and he would immediatelychange his game to help them get back up to speed.
Barry is of the exact same mold, and that is what we have been missing for far too long. A manager who is also a Captain, who fully understands the players, the team and the fans.
So, I’m looking forward to Barry taking this team forward, and getting another famous win.
Ohh my prediction is a simple 2-1 win.
Game on
