Bayern Munich face the daunting challenge of winning away at Inter Milan on Wednesday to book a place in the semi-final of the Champions League. The Bavarian club is 2-1 down in the tie as Inter scored a late winner at Allianz Arena last week. Bayern didn’t perform poorly at home, but they lacked the cutting edge in the final third to punish Simone Inzaghi’s men.
Die Roten also surrendered a 2-1 lead against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. They are not in their best moment of the season, but performances have been fairly decent. It will take a near-perfect performance on Wednesday to beat Inter Milan.
Let us look at the potential starting XI for Bayern in probably Vincent Kompany’s biggest game of his coaching career.
Manuel Neuer has not recovered in time to be fit for the big game against Inter Milan. Jonas Urbig will start in the goal at San Siro. The young German goalkeeper has not kept a clean sheet in the last few games. It would be the perfect time to get one under his belt.
Josip Stanisic did a good job in the heart of defense during the second half against Borussia Dortmund. It won’t be a surprise if he starts in the same role alongside Kim Min-jae on Wednesday. The South Korean defender was poor against Dortmund. He will look to shrug off the poor performance and get back to his best against Inter Milan.
Raphael Guerreiro made a telling impact in the Der Klassiker after coming off the bench in the second half. The Portuguese did enough to start in the left-back position. Meanwhile, Konrad Laimer will slot in the right-back position on Wednesday.
Aleksandar Pavlovic has recovered from illness and is available for selection. However, Kompany will likely go with the in-form midfielders. Joshua Kimmich will play the deeper role and help Die Roten dictate the tempo of the game. The German midfielder’s delivery from set-piece can be vital in a defensively solid team like Inter Milan.
Leon Goretzka will be the other central midfield player for Die Roten on Wednesday. He has stepped up for Bayern when the team needed him the most this season. Another quality performance on Wednesday will effectively seal his stay at the club beyond this season.
The attacking midfielder will be none other than Thomas Muller. The veteran German forward is in good form, scoring against Inter last week and providing one assist in Der Klassiker. His experience will be crucial for Bayern to get the victory in San Siro.
The front three selects itself for Bayern on Wednesday. Harry Kane will lead the line. He hit the woodwork last week against Inter. The English striker will look to go one step better and find the back of the net at San Siro.
Michael Olise is one of the first names on the team sheet due to his exceptional form in Ruckrunde. He will slot in the right-wing role.
Despite the promising cameo of Serge Gnabry on Saturday and the return of Kingsley Coman to the matchday squad, Leroy Sane should start on the left flank. He has been in a good run of form over the last few weeks.
