France secured their ticket to the 2026 World Cup early with a 4-0 win over Ukraine – with Bayern’s Michael Olise as the key scorer.
France did their duty and qualified for the 2026 World Cup with one matchday to go, but Didier Deschamps‘ team had to wait a long time against a courageous and physically robust Ukraine before they lived up to their role as favourites.
It was clear early on that Ukraine would give the French nothing away. The visitors defended with discipline, disrupted aggressively and closed down the space in the center. France dominated possession, but failed to create any clear goalscoring opportunities for long periods of the first half.
It was only after the break that the game turned, with Kylian Mbappé converting a penalty in the 55th minute to give the Équipe Tricolore an important 1-0 lead. The goal not only brought relief, but also significantly more dynamism to their attacking play.

And then Bayern’s Michael Olise struck: in the 76th minute, the Munich attacking player capitalized on a mistake by the Ukrainian defence and scored to make it 2-0. The goal finally broke the visitors‘ resistance and underlined once again why Olise is becoming an increasingly important part of France’s attack – variable, technically strong and with an enormous drive towards goal.
After Olise’s goal, the game was decided. Ukraine had to open up, France exploited the space. Mbappé increased the lead with his second goal in the 83rd minute, before Hugo Ekitiké made it 4:0 shortly before the end (88′).
With this clear success, France now have an unassailable lead in their qualifying group and a six-point advantage with one match remaining – meaning direct participation in the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico is now assured.
The evening was another milestone for Olise, with the Bayern star confirming his strong form for the national team and continuing his upward trend.
France celebrate their World Cup ticket – and in Munich they should be delighted with Olise’s next strong performance.
