Although the German national team lost their final group match 1-2 to Ecuador, they have nevertheless qualified for the round of 32 byfinishing top of Group E. Felix Nmecha started the match and was substituted in the 64th minute for his club-mate Maxi Beier, who made his debut at a World Cup finals. Waldemar Anton (on the bench) and Nico Schlotterbeck (injured) did not feature. Germany’s opponent in the next round is yet to be decided. It will be one of the third-placed teams from Groups A, B, C, D or F.

In Sweden’s 1-1 draw with Japan, Daniel Svensson came on as a substitute in the 75th minute and made his presence felt three minutes later with a shot on goal. However, the deflected effort flew wide of the target. Sweden finished third in Group F after the group stage but have nevertheless qualified for the round of 16. Possible opponents include Germany, Mexico, the USA and Switzerland.
