Ben Clark has signed a long-term contract to remain Gateshead’s first-team coach, Sunderland Echo reports. The former Sunderland and Hartlepool United defender will be part of the National League club’s new-look coaching team.

Gateshead are working to appoint a new manager after Rob Elliot’s departure earlier this week, and the club hopes to name his successor in the coming week.

A former interim boss at Gateshead, Clark joined Elliot’s staff for the second half of last season, when the Heed pulled off a remarkable escape from relegation after sitting 11 points from safety following a 15-game winless run.

Talks over fresh terms in recent weeks have now concluded, and Clark will continue on the coaching staff under the incoming manager when the squad return for pre-season next month.

Clark said the club means a great deal to him and he is eager for the new season. He spoke of enjoying daily work on the training pitch and praised the players’ commitment on match days, adding that the feel-good factor around the club and community has left him excited to be part of it again next season.
