The Calendar Commission meeting on Friday grew tense over the rescheduling of Sporting’s postponed fixture with Tondela, after Sporting signalled they did not want to play in the first available window.

Sporting instead proposed 6 May, which would place the game between league matches against Vitória de Guimarães and Rio Ave on matchdays 32 and 33. The club argued this would better manage player load and noted they could still be in the Champions League, depending on the outcome of their tie with Arsenal. Record writes that Benfica and Porto rejected the idea, with Porto the most outspoken.

With no agreement reached, the provisional date remains 29 April, subject to Sporting’s possible elimination from European competition.

After last week’s Clássico against Porto, Benfica regained momentum in the title race with a 2-1 victory at Arouca.

With 26 rounds of the Liga Portugal Betclic completed, Benfica sit third on 62 points, seven behind Porto on 69.
