Benfica assess Gonçalo Oliveira and Manu Silva for centre-back at the Dragão | OneFootball

According to O Jogo, Benfica are assessing their centre-back options for the Taça de Portugal tie at the Dragão, with B team defender Gonçalo Oliveira in contention and a possible reshuffle involving Manu Silva under review.

The Braga defeat that prevented Benfica from defending the Taça da Liga title also cost them Otamendi for the next match, which will decide passage to the semi-finals against Porto.

The setback is compounded by António Silva being injured, while Joshua Wynder, recently promoted from the B team, is also unavailable.

That leaves Tomás Araújo alongside another B team option, Oliveira, who trains regularly with the first team but is yet to make his debut.

The 19-year-old centre-back will be evaluated by José Mourinho, and the potential conversion of defensive midfielder Manu Silva to the role will also be assessed.

The coach had not addressed the issue yesterday, but will move quickly to tackle it.
