The club confirmed Richard Ríos has suffered a traumatic anterior dislocation of his right shoulder. The midfielder was forced off in the Taça de Portugal clássico against Porto, and tests have verified the worst fears.
The news is a blow for José Mourinho’s staff. Ríos will miss five key fixtures, Rio Ave away and Estrela da Amadora at home, plus European meetings with Juventus and Real Madrid. He will also sit out Tondela at the start of February.
A return could come only in the 21st round of the Liga Portugal Betclic, against Alverca.
Treatment is currently conservative, although the medical team are not ruling out other possibilities. Surgery at the end of the season remains under consideration.
This season the €22 million-rated midfielder has played 32 times for Benfica, 16 in the Liga Portugal Betclic, 10 in the Champions League, three in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça. Across 2,622 minutes he has scored three goals and provided two assists.
