Benfica opened negotiations with Real Madrid to sign centre-back Raúl Asencio, but talks broke down over conditions set by the Spanish club, according to Glorioso 1904.

Madrid insisted on a buy-back clause that would have allowed them to re-sign the 23-year-old at the end of the season, a stipulation Benfica would not accept.

Finding a new central defender has become a priority with António Silva’s departure considered imminent. The Portugal international is very close to joining Bournemouth.

Asencio matched Benfica’s brief, a young defender with scope to develop and experience at the highest level. Despite concrete interest, he will not be part of Marco Silva’s squad.

Asencio made 34 appearances for Real Madrid in 2025/26, 23 in La Liga, eight in the UEFA Champions League, two in the Spanish Super Cup and one in the Copa del Rey. He totalled 2,516 minutes, scoring two goals and providing one assist. He is valued at 20 million euros.
