Benfica are being urged to recruit an experienced centre-back to steer a youthful defence following Nicolás Otamendi’s move to River Plate. With António Silva and Tomás Araújo the only established options, the club intend to add two centre-backs, one seasoned and one with scope to develop.

"This is typical of South American players, they play with intensity and aggression," said João Manuel Pinto, speaking to Record.

The 38-year-old was captain in recent seasons and a key voice in the dressing room. Last league campaign he contested more duels than any Benfica player and posted one of the best success rates.

"Benfica loses leadership, attitude and example. Otamendi always gave everything for the club and shirt. He was also a support for António and Tomás," said Hélder Cristóvão.

"I believe the pair will be António and Tomás, although Benfica need a more experienced centre-back to make them feel the place is not secure. For the league the two are enough, but someone else is needed for other competitions," said Hélder Cristóvão.

Fulham’s 26-year-old Jorge Cuenca is among the leading candidates, he suits the profile and knows Marco Silva, though a hefty price could block a deal. His left foot is considered a valuable asset for Benfica’s next head coach.

Benfica are also monitoring other options. Olivier Boscagli of Brighton has been linked again and Portugal under-21 international Tiago Gabriel of Lecce is on the list.
