England fans across Leeds rode a rollercoaster as Thomas Tuchel’s side survived a major scare to beat the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 at the World Cup.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the Beck and Call pub in Meanwood provided the backdrop for a gallery capturing every twist and cheer from a nerve-shredding night.
A decade after the humiliating Euros exit to Iceland, history threatened to repeat when Brian Cipenga struck early for DR Congo and Lionel Mpasi kept England at bay for long spells.
England held their nerve and, with a touch of fortune at times, turned it around as Harry Kane scored twice after the break to seal a round of 32 comeback.
Sam Matthews felt Kane kept England in the tournament, suggesting they might otherwise have been on the plane home.
Janet Stockton praised DR Congo’s performance and expressed relief that England finally made it over the line, while Lyndsey Rowson hailed the team’s fight and refusal to give up.
The win sets up a clash with co-hosts Mexico in the early hours of Monday morning.
