Between Frustration and a New Beginning: Why the World Cup Could Be an Opportunity for Bayern

The 2026 World Cup was largely disappointing for the FC Bayern pros. The big question now is: Will the tournament once again leave a deep mark—or will Vincent Kompany succeed in turning that frustration into motivation?

Anyone at FC Bayern who hears the phrase “Winter World Cup” is bound to think of Qatar 2022. Back then, numerous Munich-based national team players returned to Germany disappointed. The consequences were clearly visible: A Bayern team that had previously been dominant lost its rhythm, its ease vanished, and the season turned into one of the most turbulent in recent years. In the end, Borussia Dortmund inadvertently saved the record champions’ title with its slip-up against Mainz, before Julian Nagelsmann himself was forced to step down as head coach just a few weeks later.

Memories of that period are likely still fresh at Säbener Straße. After all, once again, many national team players are returning without having achieved success. Germany was eliminated by Paraguay in the round of 32. France, with Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano, missed the final, and Harry Kane and England were defeated by Argentina. None of the 18 Bayern pros made it to the final.

Many disappointments—but different circumstances

Of course, a tournament like this leaves its mark. Anyone who works for weeks toward the World Cup title and fails just short of the goal—or is even eliminated early—won’t simply forget that defeat after a few days of vacation.

Nevertheless, the current situation differs significantly from that of three and a half years ago. Today’s Bayern squad is made up of different players. Above all, however, the team appears much more stable and mature than it did in 2022. Many key players have since gained experience, overcome setbacks, and won titles.

What’s more, not every Bayern pro is returning as a loser in the sporting sense. Nathaniel Brown used the World Cup to finally make his international breakthrough. Josip Stanisic put in strong performances and was even the fastest player in the tournament at one point. Min-jae Kim, Hiroki Ito, and Konrad Laimer also managed to earn personal accolades despite their national teams’ early exits.

For Ismael Saibari, however, bad luck prevailed. The new signing played a strong tournament before an injury cut his run short in the round of 32.

Kompany could be the deciding factor

Perhaps the biggest difference from 2022, however, is on the bench.

In his first year with FC Bayern, Vincent Kompany has proven time and again that he connects with his team on an emotional level. The Belgian is known for his strong communication skills, empathy, and ability to put setbacks into perspective. These are precisely the qualities that will be needed now.

Almost every World Cup participant ultimately goes home disappointed. Only one team becomes world champion. For everyone else, the tournament ends in defeat. What matters, therefore, is not that setbacks happen—but how a coach and a team deal with them.

FC Bayern has likely learned from its experiences in Qatar. The club’s leadership knows what impact a disappointing tournament can have on a team’s morale. This makes the first few weeks of preseason all the more important, as Kompany must gradually reintegrate his national team players back into the club’s daily routine.

Whether the 2026 World Cup ultimately proves to be a burden or an additional source of motivation for the new season will only become clear on the field. This time, however, the circumstances suggest that the Munich team will emerge stronger from the disappointment—rather than falling back into a mental slump.
