Southampton hope to have the 32-year-old officially through the door ASAP.

Southampton are hoping that their new first-team boss, Will Still, will be appointed before the weekend in time for the club's last Premier League game against Arsenal.

It's becoming harder and harder to see how the 32-year-old will not become the new manager/head coach of the Saints. Not long after he announced that he would be leaving French club RC Lens early in order to return to the United Kingdom, those at St Mary's quickly pounced on the opportunity to try and snap him up.

Soon enough, talks reached an advanced stage, leaving other potential candidates like former Southampton assistant Danny Rohl in the dust and still potentially searching for a new home.

Southampton and Lens will need to work out a compensation package for Still's staff, of which his two brothers, Edward and Nicholas, are a part of.

The boss himself is walking away from a contract with the Ligue 1 outfit that still has another two years to go on it, in order to be closer to his girlfriend, Sky Sports presenter Emma Saunders, who has suffered from health problems of late.

Southampton's Arsenal hopes for Will Still appointment

If possible, Southampton would love to have the 32-year-old at St Mary's for their final match in the top flight before they return to the Championship, as per Sky Sports.

The outlet further reported that there is a verbal agreement in place between both parties.

Alex Crook of talkSPORT has said, though, that a formal announcement of Still as the new boss is not likely to come before the weekend, but that there is still every chance that the Anglo-Belgian is in attendance on Sunday.

Their relegation was confirmed just over six weeks ago and was soon followed by the sacking of the boss at the time, Ivan Juric. Simon Rusk and Adam Lallana have been in control of the first-team on an interim basis since then.

Southampton were possibly headed towards setting the new record of being the worst team in Premier League history in terms of points achieved, but Rusk and Lallana have managed to guide the Saints to a mammoth 12 points from 37 games, which keeps their heads just above that of the 2007/08 Derby County team who only recorded 11 points.

Will Still could be the perfect package for Southampton

Southampton have gone through a bit of an identity crisis over the course of this season. Their philosophy-heavy first head coach of the season, Russell Martin, who led them to promotion via the play-offs, wasn't able to succeed at the highest level and wasn't willing to adapt his methods.

Then Juric came in, a more experienced head in the world of football but someone who had no prior experience of managing in this country.

Still has never done that either, at least not in the men's game, and he is said to be quite stubborn, according to French football expert Julien Laurens, but his style is not the same as a Martin. It's not as possession-heavy, but more focused on counter-pressing and winning the ball back quickly.

Southampton will hope that they have finally perfected their managerial formula, getting a nice blend of youth, tactical brains and system with Still.
