The Japanese forward has endured a luckless first season at St. Andrew's

Birmingham City's first season back in the Championship hasn't exactly gone as many predicted with six matches remaining, with frustration currently the main buzzword associated with developments at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park.

After the club followed up their record-breaking campaign in League One with two big-spending transfer windows, Blues were tipped to at least make a strong run for the play-off places under Chris Davies.

Although the first half of the campaign was one of inconsistency, there was a brief period earlier in the calendar year when it looked as though the West Midlands side stood a chance of finishing in the second tier's top six for the first time in 14 years.

However, a run of five defeats in their last seven Championship outings has seen those hopes fade into the abyss, as it would take a monumental turn of events for Birmingham to even trouble the likes of Wrexham and Southampton from here on in, even though it isn't mathematically impossible as things stand.

The pressure has now firmly been turned up on Davies as a result of the concerning run of form, which was compounded by a 1-0 home defeat to Blackburn Rovers on Good Friday.

Developments post-match were also a big talking point amongst supporters on top of another frustrating 90-minute watch in B9, and one of those involved big-money signing, Kyogo Furuhashi, whose short time in the Midlands thus far has, unfortunately, been summed up by a fresh update on his situation.

Furuhashi was, unarguably, the most hyped-up player which Blues welcomed to their revamped squad in the summer, with the Japanese striker best known for his remarkable exploits with Celtic, having scored 85 goals in 165 appearances for the Scottish Premiership giants.

Despite a frustrating six-month period in Ligue 1 with Stade Rennais, there was hope that the 31-year-old could rekindle his goalscoring touch in the Championship with Blues after they agreed a three-year contract and a transfer move worth up to £10m.

However, Kyogo's misfortune in the Second City in front of goal and in terms of gametime have been well-documented, already leading to intense speculation over his long-term future.

The striker has played 31 times in all competitions but only scored three times, with the last of those coming in the 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on January 20th.

Furuhashi has played just seven minutes of football since January 24th, being omitted from three of the last five matchday squads, before Davies revealed after the Blackburn loss that he will play no further part in the season due to undergoing surgery on a long-standing shoulder blow.

“Kyogo is out for the season,” said the Blues boss.

“He’s had his shoulder operated on, which was an ongoing thing that he kept trying to put off. In the end we decided to get it done and then he’s back for pre-season.”

Kyogo's Birmingham City future has been speculated despite Chris Davies' comments

Davies' aforementioned comments may suggest that Kyogo is still a part of his long-term thinking at St. Andrew's, even though many Bluenoses believe Tom Wagner must also be looking at a change in the dugout based off recent showings.

The 23-time international was indeed the subject of strong reunion talk in January with Celtic, before it was reported that a £40,000 per week wage proved to be a stumbling block, whilst divisional rivals, Swansea City, were also credited with interest.

There were also hints that the forward could move to an MLS side, before the division's transfer window slammed shut last week, albeit Kyogo isn't the only Blues striker with question marks over their future, with Marvin Ducksch also attracting interest amid his 11-goal season.
