The Villa full-back has been in front of the cameras for the promotion of a Blues-linked Netflix film

Birmingham City and Aston Villa haven't played a competitive fixture against each other for seven years, but that hasn't stopped the feeling of animosity between the two fanbases from spreading in recent times.

It is currently the Villans who rule the roost in Birmingham, with their victory in the UEFA Europa League Last 16 against French side, LOSC Lille, ensuring the B6 club have made it to the quarter-final stage, at a minimum, in some form of European competition for the third successive year.

Whilst Unai Emery has got his team regularly competing against some of the best sides in England and, indeed, the continent on a frequent basis since his appointment in November 2022, Blues have plenty of ground to make up if they are to get back on an even keel with their Second City rivals.

Since their last clash, infamously remembered for Jack Grealish scoring the winner at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park in March 2019, months before Villa earned promotion from the Championship, Blues have been relegated to League One, but were able to respond in record-breaking fashion last term.

As such, they now have well-documented ambitions of returning to the top-flight in the years to come, with Tom Wagner giving the club plenty of worldwide attention through sponsorship deals, television docuseries' and the unveiling of an upcoming 62,000-seater stadium.

Indeed, the unveiling of the Powerhouse stadium in November 2025 took place at Digbeth Loc Studios, which were founded by lifelong Bluenose and screenwriter, Steven Knight.

Knight, of course, is best known for the creation of Peaky Blinders - a historical drama series which first aired in 2013.

Unsurprisingly, the series has continuously brought plenty of attention and stereotypes to Birmingham as a city, and its success has also led to the making of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which was released earlier this month.

On March 3rd - the night Blues lost 3-1 to Middlesbrough - a premiere which included Knight and Cillian Murphy - who plays lead character Tommy Shelby - was attended by several high-profile names, including some of a Villa persuasion.

This is likely to have left some Bluenoses rather confused, and so is the trailer of the film on Netflix Polska (Poland).

Matty Cash stars in Netflix Polska's Peaky Blinders trailer

That's because, the trailer, which was published on the organisation's X account on March 20th - the day 'Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man' went live on Netflix throughout the world - involved another Villa ace and 23-time Poland international, Matty Cash.

Cash qualifies to represent the Central European nation through his maternal grandparents, both of whom were born in Poland, despite the fact he was born in Slough, Berkshire.

Like many of the Villa squad, the 28-year-old has become one of the best-performing players in his position in the Premier League after previously excelling in the Championship with Nottingham Forest before his £14m move to Villa Park in September 2020.

The defender can be seen within the video quoting some of the Shelby family's most infamous lines from the original series, only this time they are altered to phrases such as "by order of Matty Cash..."

Unsurprisingly, the Villa man's cameo in the trailer has left many of his own supporters in B6 slightly bemused, whilst others across the city will also be confused due to the show's well-documented association with the Small Heath area, which is a stones' throw away from St. Andrew's.

Earlier this week, the aforementioned Knight was talking up the prospects of Blues being able to resign Jude Bellingham in the years to come, if the vision set out by Knighthead Capital Management comes to fruition.

The screenwriter and Peaky Blinders were also heavily linked to the video which unveiled the Powerhouse, with Paul Anderson (Arthur Shelby) reacting to the plans in an intriguing fashion.

Meanwhile, whilst no Blues players were not seen in the trailers of the new film, it was confirmed that the club had struck a deal with Netflix which focuses on the new film's release.

As such, the Good Friday fixture with Blackburn Rovers has been confirmed as a 'Peaky Blinders' themed matchday takeover, to which Knight reacted to by saying: “Bringing Peaky Blinders and Birmingham City Football Club together is a wonderful marriage of entertainment, culture and sport. Overcoming adversity, being truly authentic and possessing an earthy grit which all Bluenoses can attest to are obviously present in both Tommy and the football club.
